One of the key areas Pilates influences is the vagus nerve – the main component of the parasympathetic nervous system, responsible for the body's relaxation and recovery.
The vagus nerve plays a key role in regulating the function of the internal organs, influencing heart rate, digestion and the relaxation response. Stimulating this nerve can deepen relaxation and improve cognitive function.
Pilates practice can influence the vagus nerve through:
One of the less obvious, yet remarkably important, ways in which Pilates affects the nervous system is by stimulating the vagus nerve through movement of the limbs. When we perform movements that engage the arms and legs, nerve signals from the muscles and joints are sent to the central nervous system. This stimulation activates the vagus nerve, which plays a key role in regulating the body's state of arousal.
Limb movement – especially when synchronised with the breath, as it is in Pilates – can increase the activity of vagal receptors that are sensitive to changes in pressure and stretch within the chest and abdomen. These receptors, known as mechanoreceptors, send calming signals to the brain, leading to a state of deep relaxation.
To understand how Pilates affects energy levels and alertness, it is essential to understand the brain–body–brain arousal loop. During movement – particularly movement that engages large muscle groups and the deep core muscles – specific neural circuits are activated. These circuits begin in the motor cortex of the brain, pass through the spinal cord and end in the adrenal glands, triggering the release of adrenaline (epinephrine).

Adrenaline does not cross the blood–brain barrier, but it does act on the adrenergic receptors of the vagus nerve. When adrenaline binds to these receptors, it stimulates the areas of the brainstem responsible for releasing noradrenaline in the brain. The result is greater arousal, concentration and energy. This mechanism is why even gentle movement can boost energy levels and improve cognitive function.
With its focus on mindful movement and deep muscle activation, Pilates can effectively initiate this arousal loop – not only helping to build physical strength, but also heightening alertness and improving wellbeing.
Regular Pilates practice can lead to:
By integrating controlled breathing, mindful movement and concentration, Pilates can have a positive effect on the vagus nerve, promoting relaxation and reducing stress. This makes it an effective way to support both mental and physical health, with benefits ranging from reducing adrenaline to improving cognitive function. What is more, by stimulating the brain–body–brain loop, Pilates can provide energy, sharpen concentration and strengthen body and mind at the same time.
